VMware,HP To Bring Cloud, SOA to Next-Gen DataCenters

VMware and HP are working together to develop software to manage mixed physical and virtual datacenters, in what officials describe as an effort to blend next-gen technologies for datacenter integration and on-demand applications using SOA-type standards and practices.

VMware said it will offer datacenter management and automation software to standardize on HP’s Business Technology Optimization (BTO) software, which is also a key element of HP’s SOA offerings.

The result of the VMware/HP collaboration will be an easy to access library of pre-configured virtualized application environments that allow admins and datacenter professionals to reduce hardware costs, automate manual provisioning tasks, and accelerate application development and test cycles.

“By integrating HP BTO technologies for application management with VMware vCenter and combining it with the performance, reliability and security of the VMware platform, we would be able to offer our joint customers an ideal foundation for their next-generation datacenters,” said Raghu Raghuram, vice president and general manager of VMware’s Server Business Unit, in a statement.

Also part of the effort, VMware and HP will also integrate HP BTO software with VMware vCenter Lab Manager, and jointly develop and sell enhanced virtualization management offerings for VMware vCenter and HP BTO customers based on the HP BTO application and infrastructure discovery technologies so they can better manage their VDC-OS environments. VDC-OS is highly elastic, self-managing and self-healing, allows businesses to benefit from the flexibility and efficiency of the “lights-out” datacenter, according to the companies.

“Through an expanded co-development relationship with HP we would further strengthen the VDC-OS platform as the best place to run all enterprise applications,” VMware’s Raghuram added. VDC-OS also lets IT admins pool a variety of hardware into an “internal enterprise cloud” that acts like a single, giant computer and can safely and automatically move workloads to external clouds when companies need additional computing capacity.

The latest VMware/HP partnerswhip builds on the companies' on-going collaboration on virtualization and integrated management. HP's current software portfolio for VMware allows IT admins to monitor, deploy and control your HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem servers and HP StorageWorks storage from almost anywhere.
